This reproduction print celebrates the life of Margaret Fountaine who was a Victorian Explorer who travelled to over 60 countries studying and collecting butterflies, which she described as ‘the greatest passion of my life’. She was intrepid and fearless and was determined to follow her own unconventional path.
She published numerous papers on her work and the butterfly genus Fountainea was named in her honour. She raised many butterflies from eggs and released them into the wild and her beautiful watercolour studies of the life cycles of butterflies are in the Natural History Museum and still used for reference today.
Her personal life and loves were documented in a very candid way and later references to her life have often made more of this than her significant achievements in science and lepidoptery. She was probably one of the greatest naturalists of her time.
