This reproduction print celebrates the life of Mary Kingsley who was an intrepid explorer who set off to explore West Africa unchaperoned. She studied local tribes and collected new species of fish for the British Museum. She was warned about cannibal tribes and disease but in her words ‘my mind got set on going, so I had to go.’
Her journeys took her along the rivers of Remboue and Ogooue with their mangrove swamps, rapids and dense forests. She learnt to paddle an Ogowe canoe, nearly drowned in the wild water and even fought off crocodiles!
Her travel diaries are filled with her daring exploits and with her written words she helped to shape western perception of African culture through her outspoken views on colonialism.
